Carving a Dog

1) Layout: Trace pattern on the wood and cut with a bandsaw, jigsaw or scroll-saw to create the
dog blank.
2) Rough out:
1. Mark center line of the dog blank, all around the
edge
2. Mark brim, top & bottom of hat.
3. Mark nose on both sides and front of dog blank.
4. Mark ears on both sides and top, make sure to include some depth
for the ears
5. Mark mouth / tongue
6. Mark the back legs
7. Mark tail and include a curve to it
8. Mark ball of hat showing on the opposite side from the tail
curve
9. Mark separation of the front and rear legs
3) Carve:
1. Depth of the hat
2. Round the hat
3. Separate bottom of hat from body
4. Round body
5. Narrow the face
6. Separate ears from the body
7. Cut nose in
8. Round fur on hat & ball
9. Cut tongue in
10. Round & shape features
4) Detail:
1. Ears – make them to either be straight or floppy
2. Hat – add divots
3. Feet – add toes
4. Tail – carve in tail
5) Final Details: Color body as desired
1. Red for hat
2. White for fur
3. Black for nose
4. Pink for tongue
